Diabetes and its causes
Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases in which the amount of
insulin produced by the pancreas is reduced quantitatively, or because the
body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both, which results in the
increase of sugar in the blood, and excess sugar eliminates outside through
urine.
Alarming fact about Diabetes
According to the International Diabetes Federation, India has more than 65 million
diabetic patients. This number will reach more than 79 million in 2030,
according to WHO report.
Types of Diabetes
TYPE 1 DIABETES
Also called “Insulin
Dependent Diabetes Mellitus" (IDDM). Usually, starts in childhood which is
why also called “Juvenile Diabetes”.
TYPE 2 DIABETES
Develops later in life
(after 40 years of age or more), known as "Non-insulin Dependent Diabetes
Mellitus" (NIDDM) or “Maturity-onset diabetes”.
GESTATIONAL DIABETES
Appears during pregnancy, and disappears after delivery.
These women have a greater risk of developing Diabetes later in their life.
Symptoms of Diabetes
- Polyuria – There is an Increased and frequent desire for urination.
- Polydipsia – Increased thirst - There is a frequent desire for drinking water.
- Polyphagia – There is a frequent desire to eat (Increased hunger).
- Glycosuria – Presence of sugar in the urine.
- Loss of weight – There is a constant loss of weight.
- Fatigue – The person feels weakness.
- Pain in limbs – A person always feels pain and weakness in the lower extremities.
- Delay in the healing of wounds – There is a delay in wound healing due to excessive blood sugar.
Risk Factors
- Race – For unknown reasons, people from certain races like American Indians, Hispanics, and Asian-Americans including black people are at higher risk of getting diabetes.
- Family History – If any of your parents have Diabetes, your chances of getting diabetes increase.
- Obesity – Excessive adipose tissues increase the resistance to insulin action.
- Sedentary lifestyle – Lack of physical activity increase your risk of getting diabetes as your cells use less glucose for energy and thus there is an increasing level of blood glucose.
- Age – In type 2 diabetes, the chances of diabetes increase as you age. Loss of muscle mass and less exercise due to old age might be the reason.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) - Women with Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are more prone to get diabetes with irregular menses, obesity, and unwanted hair growth.
- Hypertension – High blood pressure (Hypertension) increase the chance of type 2 diabetes.
Complication of Diabetes
Uncontrolled diabetes for a long time can cause some severe &
life-threatening complications, such as:
- Retinopathy (Eye Damage) –
Excessive blood sugar levels
can damage the blood vessels of the retina, which can lead to a disturbance in
vision or complete blindness. This condition is called “Diabetic Retinopathy”.
Diabetes can damage the walls of blood vessels
which nourish your nerve or extremities. It leads to tingling, numbness, and
pain in the fingertips which gradually extends to upward.
- Renal Failure (Kidney Damage) – Diabetes can damage the small capillaries of nephrons (the filtration system of the kidney), which leads to Renal failure.
- Cardiovascular diseases (Heart diseases) – High blood sugar level increases the chance of many cardiovascular problems such as Atherosclerosis, Angina (Chest Pain), Coronary heart disease (CHD), and even Heart attack.
- Skin Diseases - Due to the high blood sugar level, the body becomes more prone to get Skin diseases because a high sugar level gives favorable conditions for the growth of bacteria and fungus in the body.
